Fly Fishing For Smallmouth Bass in Michigan
The theme “the softer side of ANGST” was coined by my friend JEEPSTREAM. I used his words to inspire me.
This is my best spot for smallmouth bass within an hours drive from my home. It is truly a gem.
Above the dam, I used my kayak, the MALIBU MINI X. The fishing was good, but, it is below the dam where the fishing is exceptional. I wanted to use my kayak and explore above the dam for the first time.
Below the dam, you can wet wade with ease. I fished that one hole for an hour and I must have caught about 15-20 fish. Filming is hard when you try to land a fish at the same time. I lost alot of fish while filming.
I cheated on one attemp. I used spinning gear when I came across what I thougt was pike-ish water. Instead, I caught another smallmouth…go figure!!!
I used a 9-foot 4-weight fly rod which is my favorite. The flies were brass wonders, mikey’s nymph, knobblers, hair’s ear nymph, pheasant tail nymph, and wooly buggers. All of these flies are deadly for any species in the sunfish family which includes smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, and a whole host of panfish/bream.
Please enjoy the softer side of angst.
