Fly fishing in New Zealand; monster trout battle

Fly fishing for trout in New Zealand at 6am Somewhere, far, far away, in a small stream hidden in a the remote kiwi wilderness, a monster trout stirs, blissfully unaware of the international stardom awaiting it… A flinch for the pheasant tail nymph and a battle ensues as Olly the otter clutches the camera and Dougie the Nose heaves on his splint of graphite (also known as sting)! Eventually a huge trout comes to the net, albeit in an unorthodox fashion!

Hey man,
I thought the fish was going to break me off when I first saw it…. I then stalked up behind it and popped the pheasant tail and royal wulff tandem rig over its nose…… The fish was seriously strong and really put a hoop in my rod! Amazing fight and lucky to have captured it the way I did….

Oh yes that fish was tricky to land. I had to flip around, corner the fish and then scoop like a bear. Very lucky and great fun!! I can’t say I do that with every single fish I catch!! Thanks for the comment.

Yeah I had to play the fish quick because I had rapids below me, which were out of shot, and I new if I gave that fish even a sniff of freedom down the rapids then I would have had it!

Very nice fish Troutcatcher! That flip around move to get past you had me going at the end. It’s one thing to hook up a fine fish but it’s another thing to land them, don’t I know. Keep casting and stay dry!
